The difference is the rubber material used for the sole. Indoor shoes have a gum rubber sole that is much softer then the rubber used on outdoor shoes. The softer rubber "sticks" better to gym/basketball court surfaces. The outdoor sole rubber is harder so it wears less on outdoor textured court surfaces like tennis or pickleball courts. You can use indoor court shoes outdoors but they will wear out much faster. Outdoor shoes can be used indoor only if they are non marking (dont leave a streak on the floor) but outdoor shoes don't come close to the grip on the floor that a gum rubber sole shoe will have.
